Bicycles... the joys of "flying" 'round town made easier!

I've been a bike-a-holic since I learned to ride on my sixth birthday. Every once in a while I forget the feeling of flying - and then I get on the bike and it's as if I have wings!

This morning I'm flipping through my BCAA magazine and came across these great bits of bike news:

ONE, as of June 1, 2009 if you're a BCAA member and a cyclist, you can phone for roadside assistance for bike-related mechanical problems and flats. ¡Muy cool!

Even cooler, this service is available to non-BCAA members during the week of "Commuter Challenge" (June 1-5, 2009). FMI: www.bcaa.com/bikeassist

TWO, one of my fave companies (and my main financial institution because it does so many cool things like this), Vancity Savings Credit Union, distributed 50 free bikes to the community several years ago to "encourage people to try it." The company sets the pace for other businesses and institutions by supporting the bike-to-work option by having lockers and showers for employees and bike racks for customers.

THREE, although the up-front costs of dedicated bike-ways may deter local governments and developers from making this a priority, it can be seen as part of meeting Climate Action Charter goals in BC.

FOUR, another way this saves $$$ in the medium and long term is that it supports healthier (more exercise, cleaner air) transportation – which means incrementally lowering illness-related costs (ie. health care) that are beginning to financially cripple our aging society.

FIVE, places like Amsterdam, Paris, and now Montreal are (or long have been) supplying "free bikes" to facilitate bicycle commuting.

I'm excited about these bits of good news for cycling. They inspire to dust off the two-wheeler, breathe the sweet air of spring, and feel the joy of flying again!
